Butter Continues to bring the Cream of Music’s Crop to Queen’s City

Last night, Butter Charlotte launched its Butter Wednesday series with the Let the Children Techno release party, which featured performances by some of the best of the best in dance music and house beats. Mattie Safer, formerly of The Rapture, performed the single “Is that Your Girl,” from soon-to-be released album Let the Children Techno, while Dances with White Girls DJed.

Before going solo, Mattie Safer was the singer/bassist for the dance-punk group The Rapture. Now, the Washington, DC native and Brooklyn resident has been working on an album of his own as well as a contribution to the Ed Banger compilation Let the Children Techno which brings together tracks from the top names in dance and house music as well as a few new ones that will likely rise soon to the top. The album has been praised so far for putting forth a both softer and more profound side of dance music.

Of the twenty tracks on Let the Children Techno, compiled and mixed by Busy P and DJ Mendhi, Safer’s has already been cited as the best. It contains an edge reminiscent of The Rapture’s work that sets it aside. One of the most laudable aspects of this particular track is that it is even better live. Last night’s performance at Butter proved this, but if you missed it, you can experience a “live” performance of the song on Safer’s website and Facebook, where he posted as a Valentine’s Day gift for fans, of sorts, a music video for “Is that Your Girl” filmed in his own living room. In the video, Safer is clearly singing his own lyrics, demonstrating a powerful, energetic voice.

“Is that Your Girl” is an excellent illustration of Mattie Safer’s talent. Self-proclaimed, via facebook, as being “a musician, singer, songwriter, producer, sometimes remixer, (and) occasional DJ,” this artist is without a doubt one to follow.

Dances with White Girls was not just the Tonto to Mattie Safer’s Lone Ranger though. The DJ, whose name is a play on the name of the film character, Dances with Wolves, co-wrote and co-produced “Is that Your Girl” in addition to DJing last night’s release party at Butter Charlotte, showing that he too possesses a compelling combination of talent and wit.

He has been called the ruler of the New York City and Los Angeles underground club scenes and definitely demonstrated this prowess last night, delivering the beats for a party that lasted well into the night. There was no lack of humor in the performance, though, as he tweeted in a series of tweets last night “There’s mad bank of America breasts jobs here” – at least Dances with White Girls knows the industry the city of Charlotte is most famous for. This man has smarts and a blunt sense of humor. Don’t worry, Dances, we’re laughing with you.

I give Butter Wednesday two thumbs way up. If Butter continues to bring such talented and thrilling artists to one of the elite clubs in Charlotte, it will not only become the place to be on a Wednesday night, but also make Charlotte a more noticeable mark on the US maps for music and nightlife alike.

Next Wednesday, Butter continues its series of band-members-turned-DJs with a performance from Chris Baio of Vampire Weekend. Stay posted for more information on why you should and how you can experience the other, hidden side of Baio’s musical talents!
